The wind whistled through the shattered glass of the windows. The startled doves flew around the intruders before returning to their nests in the loft of the abandoned castle.

“I swear to you.” He placed his hand over his heart. “I’m coming back. I’ll take you out of this wretched place, over the mountains, and across the seas. I give you my word on my honor; therefore, I must return.”

She smiled, tears burning in her eyes. He was so noble, but she knew there would be no returning from this war.
